Hamilton Masonic Watch Restore

I bought this watch as a gift for one of my techs. Unfortunately it ended up being a parting gift, but hey, that’s life!

I was intrigued by this watch because of the masonic symbols (which is why I bought it for a certain person) but became way more intrigued by it when I opened it up and discovered the miniature automatic winding rotor in the movement. I am sure it’s probably a bit inefficient as it’s rarely seen nowadays, but it’s certainly a curiosity.

The movement is a Hamilton 663. It seems a little busy inside considering it’s basic feature set (time only), but it actually worked when I received it. Re-reading the eBay listing, seems like it’s advertisement as “not working” was more of a “cover my ass if it doesn’t work well”.

Time grapher says its gaining 17 seconds a day, has an amplitude of 251, and a beat error of 2.3ms. Lets see if we can fix that.

Near the winding rotor is this reversing wheels and frankly a strange set up with that little piece with the spring wire coming out of it like a lightsaber. The center wheel also has it’s own cock. It also seems to have no jewel and a second piece closer to the pivot. Don’t quite remember if I ever figured out what was going on there.

663 movement post cleaning and oiling.

Probably my best time grapher reading yet. This one really came together!

On the receiving person’s wrist. Very peculiar watch for those with very peculiar interests.
